Meet George Ranville
George is a current Village of Mackinaw City Trustee and has earned the respect of community members, fellow trustees, and village staff. He has deep family roots in the Straits of Mackinaw with French and Native American ancestry. George’s dad was born and raised with 8 sisters in Mackinaw City.
The oldest of two brothers, George’s parents owned a small meat market where he learned the lessons of hard work. After George graduated from Hope College he was commissioned as a United States Navy Officer and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. After returning to Michigan he began a career and started several small business. He founded Alternatives in Motion (AIMGR.org) and was Executive Director for 17 years of the 501c3 charity that provided wheelchairs to those with disabilities who were uninsured – across Michigan.
Eight years ago he then established Biere De Mac Brew Works, a microbrewery in Mackinaw City with his son Danny and wife Gail. Located in Emmet County, just south of Mackinaw City, they produce and distribute the award winning “Biere of the Straits”. Biere De Mac Brew Works sells craft beer and pizza at their tap room and distributes kegs to other restaurants and establishments across northern
Elected to Mackinaw City Council as a Trustee. Top vote getter.
4-year chairman of the Finance and Human Resources Committee. Tackled the annual budget challenges, (balanced), assisted with new hire staff review, worked closely with village supervisor. Strongly supported the addition of a 7th full time police officer.
Spearheaded the Mackinaw City “Deep Water Pier” effort, working with State Representatives, leaders of the Michigan Municipal League, Village leaders, and DNR officials with the goal of bringing cruise ships to Mackinaw City. Member of Marina Committee

Appointed Board Member for Emmet County “Northern Lakes Economic Alliance” pursuing economic development in Emmet and other counties.
Member of Mackinac Associates, Supporters of Michigan Historic Parks, including Fort Michilamackinac in Mackinaw City, Fort Mackinac on Mackinac island, and Mill Creek Discovery Center East of Mackinaw City. Biere De Mac brewers collaborated with the forts by brewing a beer celebrating the 125th anniversary of the state parks. “Fleur De Mac” was selected by Mlive as the 2021 Beer of the Year in Michigan.

George is an outdoorsman: avid hunter, cross-country skier, endurance runner, mountain biker and swimmer. He has completed six full 26.2 mile marathons including the Bayshore Marathon in Traverse City.
